The Bhut Jolokia — also known as Ghost Pepper has been around for many centuries and it is believed to have originated in Assam, India. In the hills of northeastern India, it’s called the “bhut jolokia” — the “ghost chili.” Anyone who has tried it, they say, could end up an apparition. Let’s get to the facts.

It was only introduced to the Western world in 2000. In 2007, The Ghost Pepper was certified as the hottest Chili Pepper on the planet in The Guinness Book of World Records. The scientific measurement of a chili’s spiciness is known as a Scoville. While we don’t know how it’s calculated, this is some food for thought.
Classic Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units. A basic jalapeno pepper measures anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000. The previous record holder, the Red Savina habanero, was tested at up to 580,000 Scovilles. Now, though, with scientific proof that barreled the bhut jolokia into the record books — it has more than 1,000,000 Scoville units.
Outsiders, a farmer from Assam insisted, shouldn’t even try it. “If you eat one,” he told a visitor, “you will not be able to leave this place.”

The spiciest food I have eaten was a custom ordered batch of Habanero sauced wings. I told the cooks to make the wings as hot as they possibly could. They waiter and waitress brought out the wings with tongs and gloves and watched in amazement as I sweat my way through a pound of their hottest. Hopefully I can try the bhut jolokia on for size.

My husband bought some Jalapeno Jelly at a specially jelly and jam shop in Canada while on vacation a few years ago. He loves to torture unsuspecting visitors with it, offering it as a ‘chutney’ or putting it out with scones! It’s probably the hottest thing I have ever eaten, and of course, it LOOKS completely harmless. It isn’t!!

My brother got some ghost chili powder for Christmas last year – it is actually a very flavorful chili I really liked it. It has a nice smoky flavor, unlike Habanero peppers that are just hot with a sour taste the Bhut Jolokia I would actually use as a great addition to grilling or other foods. I’d love to win the giveaway and try it again. Oh and I wouldn’t try rubbing your eyes after touching habaneros…. I used to grow them and made that mistake once…
